Farmers
It looks like the farmers are gonna be out again to protest their lack of subsidization by the government again. They were out protesting a week or two ago, complaining that they can't compete in the current global marketplace (where others are much more heavily subsidized, i.e. American farmers). It makes me wonder whether it is even worth it for these folks to keep growing some of the crops they do and either sell their farms to developers for untold millions (rare, I know) or grow something a little more lucrative (i.e. how some tobacco farmers are into ginseng now). I know it isn't as simple as that, but to someone on the outside who just hears on the radio how the 401 and 404 are going to be full of tractors today, that's the best I can do.
And another thing...
I made sure I hustled my buns in early today to get clear of said tractors. Who wants to get caught behind somebody doing 30 km/hr on the 401 (unless it is a snowplow in a blizzard)? Hopefully these same folks will be long home by the time I head to the Kay-Dub tonight.

I am glad Shea made no comments about your buns or how they hustle.
If the farmers don't make enough money then they should find another job or go on welfare. That is what the rest of us would have to do. If enough of them did that then the price of eggs would go up and then they would make more money. Supply and demand MOFO!
And it would be cool for programmers to wear overalls again.
Just ask Henry.

OK Derk. Think hard about what you ate today and ask yourself where did this food come from (think where it was before the supermarket)? Next: Can't grow the food without tractors they pay for the roads too, learn to share and leave a few minutes earlier. If a farmer sells his land do you think it will be to another farmer? Or maybe hmmm.... a land developer which would turn a field into cookie cutter houses, how pretty! Then instead of complaining about tractors you can have good ole' congestion to complain about!

I hate writing a response and having my computer go boom. Sigh.
I stopped at the farmers market this weekend to buy a whole pile of veggies. I would rather pay money directly to the farmer than the grocer who pays them much less. And the reason Ontario farmers are complaining about subsidization is because other countries heavily subsidize their farmers so that prices can be lower.
I don't have a problem sharing the road. I am a cyclist after all. But I am also realistic. Having a convoy of tractors driving down the expressway at 30km/hr is disruptive to everyone. And even though there are no minimum speed limits here officially, unofficially it is unlawful to drive too slowly - and 30 in a 100 is too slowly. And you probably didn't read my "Monday morning commute" column, since I leave plenty early already. ;)
The farmers will sell their farms to whoever gives them the most money. And I'm all for that. They have put their lives into their farms and deserve a big payout to retire on. I know of two farmers right now who are planning to do just that. And given they are already surrounded by cookie cutter houses, I don't mind them making their buck. (I will have a future blog about this topic too).
I already complain about congestion. Since I have only blogged for a week, I haven't directly said anything yet. But don't worry. I'll get to that too. :)
